The dream is gone, or the heirs of the fragments
Rio Reiser and his band One Ton considered as the epitome of West Germany’s culture of protest in the early seventies. “No power for nobody,” “power break, which makes you break” and just giving the title piece “The dream is over” were hymen, which is against the rich, smug-middle-class lifestyle in the years between ’68 and Helmut Kohl introduced mental-turned moral turnaround. And later, in times of peace and anti-nuclear movement, the shards belonged to the cultural heritage of the political left, which should take a step march through the institutions and now sit at the controls, either in power or have failed. The band certainly had frustrated after years of disillusionment in the Kreuzberg scene and retired to the North Frisian Fresenhagen in a kind of inner exile, frustrated by the daily struggle and his own failures. Should adjust only later, when Rio Reiser dreamed it would be like “King of Germany to be”. 1996 finally be the much too early death Reiser. This is something of the history of the band pieces, how to pack them in a documentary, but the dream is gone, or the heirs of the pieces dating from 2001 by Christopher Schuch will not be just that – the documentation of a band. Instead, he asks, what are the effects of the polit-rockers and the manner in which bands and performers at all today can still be political.
The result at which it comes, is devastating, but honestly suspect hardly surprising, and suggests that the question has already been made wrong, or at least misleading. It should rather be: Can we now be political at all? Have perhaps not yet the political and social conditions changed so much that the strategies of the political come along today, unlike in the seventies? Is today a protest at all possible in a society where everything is a pose, to marketable product, a pure attitude? Or asked another way: What would the effect of the broken today?
However, the significant flattening of the protest culture that is in any kind of commitment to the business, feel uncomfortable and creates difficulties, because one wants to really quite different, clearly … And so the wind interviewed bands such as The Star The Department Britta Plumb or Element of Crime (# ) to Christoph Schuch issues fall into justifications and distribute a free-floating melancholy and resignation. And it is exactly that – in addition to the highly simplistic approach Schuch – another irritant in this otherwise interesting film – the constant bad conscience of being late-born, the pressure to justify why you can in this time hardly be political, not least the manner as was previously the case. The times have changed. And with them the rock music and its relationship to politics and society. At this realization, unfortunately, is no way. The discussion about the possibilities and strategies of political being today should be continued and urgent need. But please not with the recipes of yesteryear …
